Resource Audit

Diary Entry One

This week I completed a resource audit and began thinking about the sort of thing that would be possible to create when it comes to my music video. As well as this, these past few weeks I have been watching as many videos from as many genres as I possibly can, in an attempt to come up with some form of idea. Although this has confused me somewhat, I've found a few things from a few videos that I really liked the idea of...

Kanye West ft. T Pain - Good Life

This has always been one of my favourite videos, in particular I really like the mix of animation & real-life, and also of colour & black-and-white. However, I think this only works because the production values are so high, so i'm not entirely sure it's something I could recreate.

Justice - D.A.N.C.E.

Like the Kanye West one, this video mixes animation and real-life, though this uses the real life parts as a frame for the animation, which I thought was really clever. I especially like the part around 1:05, where the people in the line step aside, revealing the person behind in a different t-shirt. I thought this would be an interesting concept to have in my own video, even if it were not animated.

OK Go - Get Over It

This one uses an entirely different style to the two above, but I think it works really well as a band-based music video, and would be easier to recreate. What I really enjoyed about this video was the fast-paced editing, which fits perfectly in time with the song, and the visual representations of some of the lyrics, which makes it more interesting to watch than a completely performance-based one. These are both aspects that I am interested in including in my own music video.

Jonsi - Animal Arithmetic

This video was shown to me by my teacher, and I really liked the use of extreme close-ups, which, like the OK Go one, make a performance video a little more exciting. This would also avoid the issue of having slightly awkward performers, because the viewer is only exposed to a small amount at a time. I thought this could be combined with the things I like from the OK Go music video, and I began to think of the type of song this would work well for.

Immediately I thought of the song 'Short Skirt/Long Jacket' by the band Cake, as it has lyrics that could easily be represented visually. If I were to create a music video for this song, I would probably use many female models to present different aspects of the girl that is being sung about, and film them in extreme close-up. I asked around a few of my friends to see if they would be willing to take part in a group music video, and they all seemed keen, especially as they would not the only one being filmed.

So that is my thought process so far, but i'm trying to work on the idea constantly.

Brief

Create a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with:
- a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);
- a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

I chose to complete this brief because I think that although it will be challenging to create a realistic music video, it is something that I am far more interested in than the other options. Additionally, the majority of past students in my school have made music videos, so there are many examples I can look to to help me.
